Description

Fresh out of high school and off to college, Cassie thought she had the world by its tail, and then she met Mike. Tall, handsome and a police detective to boot, he swept her off her feet and into a whirlwind relationship that led to an engagement ring.

But things aren't always as they seem, and Cassie comes to discover that Mike has a dark side. When she learns just how dark it can be, she comes face-to-face with the greatest forward she could imagine, and it leaves her burned and scarred for the rest of her life.

Cassie isn't one to wallow in misery. She takes her experiences and a degree in psychology and sets out to help other women avoid the kind of thing that happened to her, but then one of her clients comes to her in desperation. Her abusive husband has kidnapped her daughter, and it's up to Cassie to find the girl before it's too late.

Of course, then the only trick is how to survive.

I enjoyed reading this book. What started off as a rather frivolous romance turned into a skilled development of character and response to real life issues. I strongly recommend What Lies Beneath to every reader interested in real life social issues.

Fabulous story line and an amazing lead. What an awesomely entertaining and engaging read. Had trouble getting started but once I got past the forth chapter I’ve barely been able to put it down. Can’t wait to read the next book in the series. Good reading.

Everyone has a certain preference to how they prefer their books to be. However, I found that this book was particularly hard to follow at times. Each ‘stage of life’ that we see Cassie go through is short-lived and then it seems as if we are on to the next part of her life so quickly. I wish each of these experiences that she had gone through been delved into with more detail. Each individual story line was entertaining, but it could have had more suspense leading into the reveal or there could have been a slower progression. We were also introduced to characters throughout the book that were never mentioned in later sections of the book, unknowing whatever happened to them. For example, when Cassie was living in the dorms the second time around, her new roommate during that time was considered to be her ‘best friend’ and her family took her in and they spent Christmas together, etc., but we never hear what happened with their friendship or how they ended up going their separate ways. Like I said, I enjoyed the little storylines individually, I just wish there were some loose ends that were wrapped up in the story in order to make the book seem like a whole rather than put into sections.

The same story is told and retold so many times I lost track. Needs a serious editor. Good premise but needs pruning.

This is something I’ve had to deal with from some of my fosters. It is a fearful issue scarring children permanently. Matters not whether it is physical, sexual, verbal, psychological, or ignoring, all are permanent disabilities! That is why my home was open to anyone who needed a place to be fed, loved, and housed temporary or more permanently. I do not regret that decision.
