She believes in family…

Ever since Kennedi Chase was a little girl, she dreamed of one day owning her mother's bakery boutique, Chase Confections. Now that she does, she’ll do everything she can to keep it running. When a hotshot businessman—emphasis on hot—threatens everything she holds dear, Kennedi bakes up an unconventional plan to protect her family legacy.

He believes in himself…

Real estate developer Trenton Shaw will do anything to succeed. After a bitter divorce, he’s poured his heart and soul into achieving his professional goals. A new parking garage on the Washington D.C. Wharf is essential to his casino. He won’t let a cake baker get in his way, no matter how gorgeous, tenacious, and irresistibly charming she seems to be.

There’s no denying the sizzling attraction as professional entanglements become highly personal. But when Trenton discovers Kennedi's secret, she’s forced into a desperate choice. Should she protect her family or her heart?

The story had a strong well rounded start, but soon after the time-worn tropes piled on and on, doing the predictable plot no favors. There were only a few typos and awkward wordings, but a lot of over-explaining. While research is evident in the writing there were still a number of oversights. Some were minor, like Tabitha assembling a five-tier cake prior to transport instead of putting it together on site. Others were more critical, like the Claudia conflict, where a prenatal paternity test would’ve made this book at least thirty percent shorter and saved a lot of rehashing and drawn out drama. At one point Evie attempts to defend Trent’s possessive behavior claiming, “It’s your typical male response when he’s set his sights on a female. And once he’s mated with her, his brain makes an indelible imprint of her and is hooked. To the point where he doesn’t like the idea of you hooking up with other men…It’s true. I’ve read about this. There are numerous studies and articles to back me up.” This is problematic because Evie, with the authority of her Ivy League psychology degree, is spreading misleading information since just as many studies and articles disputing theories like this can also be found, making it inconclusive at best. Given centuries worth of history, possessiveness has more to do with being raised in a monogamous society rooted in toxic masculinity and should not be defended. Kennedi defending Trenton with his philanthropy is problematic considering it’s a common practice by the ultra rich to reputation cleanse, dodge taxes, and justify maintaining the broken economic systems that allowed them to get rich through exploitative business practices and become unchecked monopolies of power. With his wallet he gentrified the Wharf and got people to violate HIPAA laws, which is a big reason a lot of people fear seeking help. As for Kennedi herself, while the circumstances with her father and bakery were well illustrated, her contribution to Chase Investments and freelance work could have benefited from the same treatment. Evidence of her freelance work is nonexistent and for the most part she just arrives at Chase Investments, gets into a fight with Trenton, and after one of them storms out it cuts to the next thing, rinse and repeat a few times. We are told she’s getting swamped by all these different responsibilities and is a very educated woman but never really shown the breadth of it and reads like resume padding. It’s also disappointing that the entire story is essentially Trenton solving all of her problems for her.

This was an okay book! I liked Kennedi, but Trenton left a lot to be desired. The side story with his ex-wife was stupid and it just got ridiculous. He was weak and spineless. It was obvious from the beginning that the lawyer was a dirtbag and that Kennedi did nothing about it was very disappointing. This was almost 700 pages; about 300 pages too long with conversations and “antagonistic views” that weren’t necessary and only detracted from the story. There was too much “yes we should be together/ no we shouldn’t”. It was like a junior high couple. I got bored with it. I won’t be continuing with the series.
