Description

INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLER • “Meaty, gripping, full of tantalizing twists” (Associated Press), this installment of the international bestselling series brings Inspector Harry Hole back from Hong Kong hot on the trail of a serial killer.

Inspector Harry Hole has retreated to Hong Kong, escaping the trauma of his last case in squalid opium dens, when two young women are found dead in Oslo, both drowned in their own blood. Media coverage quickly reaches a fever pitch. There are no clues, the police investigation is stalled, and Harry—the one man who might be able to help—can’t be found. After he returns to Oslo, the killer strikes again, Harry’s instincts take over, and nothing can keep him from the investigation, though there is little to go on. Worse, he will soon come to understand that he is dealing with a psychopath who will put him to the test, both professionally and personally, as never before.

Don't miss Jo Nesbo's latest Harry Hole thriller, Killing Moon!

And no happy ending in sight for Harry personally. It is getting to be a bit made from the same mold over and over, but still captivating stories.

Read The Snowman about 6 months ago and bought this as follow up and thought it was even better than Snowman!! Despite the length (>725 pages at my iBook font size) kept me glued and found myself unable to put it down. I do agree with some other reviewers in that there seem to be too many plot layers to unravel at the end - gotta admit that this is part of the reader's experience which keeps the story's momentum going. Just bought the next in line - "The Phantom" - hope it is as good!! Also, being an American I really appreciate the care taken to keep the translation clear enough to keep me immersed (eg. Use of miles, feet, yards, etc instead of kM, meters and so forth)as I recognize that it would be too easy to keep native Norwegian-speak in the story and lose us U.S. readers.

Here’s the problem: Nesbo creates interesting characters and some good mystery in this series, but he never knows when to stop. How many death-defying situations does our intrepid protagonist have to survive? Three? Four? It reaches a point of being ridiculous – which is the same basic problem I had with “The Snowman.” Here I am enjoying my way through a good version of the genre and then Nesbo has to ruin it all. This is a good novel in search of a better editor.

To all the people comparing this to Millenium trilogy, give me a break. That series, while good, was really only one book, divided into three sections. The Harry Hole books are each different and brilliant. Nazis, gypsies, Hong Kong gangsters, neo-colonial exploitation in Africa--these are multi-layered, impossible to guess, scary, whodunits. There has never been a more down-on-his-luck, abused, ready to give up, detective than Harry Hole. The only close comparison is Arkady Renko from Havana Bay. These books are AMAZING!

After reading The Snowman, I couldn't wait to read more by this author. So far this read is not disappointing. If you liked Steig Larsson, I recommend you start reading this author.

I just want to say thank you to the reviewer Shirtisred for your bad review! It intrigued me that you only read four pages, so i downloaded the sample. I loved Nesbo's The Snowman and this book was also great. I couldn't put it down and didn't want it to end!

Honestly, I could not put this book down. One of the best crime books I've ever read. I will definitely be reading more books by this author.
