Description

An invaluable resource for couples in which one of the partners suffers from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), this authoritative book guides troubled marriages towards an understanding and appreciation for the struggles and triumphs of a relationship affected by it, and to look at the disorder in a more positive and less disruptive way. Going beyond traditional marriage counseling which can often discount the influence of ADHD, this discussion offers advice from the author's personal experience and years of research and identifies patterns of behavior that can hurt marriages—such as nagging, intimacy problems, sudden anger, and memory issues—through the use of vignettes and descriptions of actual couples and their ADHD struggles and solutions. This resource encourages both spouses to become active partners in improving their relationship and healing the fissures that ADHD can cause. Also included are worksheets and various methods for difficult conversations so that couples can find a technique that fits their unique relationship and improve their communication skills.

Wow. I felt like I was reading about my spouse & I. This book is invaluable. The author's insights have had a very positive effect on us. This book (and the other one she wrote) have truly been enlightening and shown us that we are not alone in the 'traps' we've fallen into in our relationship. There are positive and effective ways to deal with and respond to one another. The author IS compassionate and offers practical help for both ADHD and non-ADHD partners. I'm glad she was willing to share: Thank you so much!!!

I was very excited to dig into this book. Actually I found it by chance just looking up marriage help. I never put 2+2 together thinking hmm ADHD and my marriage problems. The author did a great job with the writing as even for those who can't sit still can actually get sooo involved page by page because it relates to so much of what I and my spouse are going through. Thanks

I was recently diagnosed as an adult with inattentive adhd. I have been reading every book I can get my hands on to understand my diagnosis, how it affects my relationships, and how I can make progress. This book had useful insights and was thought provoking but I thought it was very depressing. The author suffered as a adhd spouse. She expounds on the difficulty related to being married to someone with my disorder. She offers little compassion for what it feels like to be the spouse who is forever failing, falling short, or forgetting. If you are married to someone with adhd and are at wits end, this book will validate your feelings. If you are seeking to have more compassion in your marriage and of yourself with your shortcomings, I would say skip this one.
