Description

Return to the “steamy and dreamy” (Publishers Weekly) world of Christine Feehan’s #1 New York Times bestselling Carpathian novels as thundering passions signal a dark force on the horizon...

Buried alive for hundreds of years in a volcano in South America, Dax worries that he has become the abomination that every Carpathian male fears, a victim of the insidious evil that has crept relentlessly into his mind and body over the centuries. But Dax isn’t the only one emerging from the darkness...

His name is Mitro, and he once stood by the side of the prince of the Carpathian people. Now he is the epitome of malevolence, and perpetrator of one of the most shocking killing sprees known to man. No one escaped the bloodshed, including his lifemate, Arabejila.

Now, between Dax and Mitro, a violent game has begun—one that has marked Riley Parker, the last descendent of Arabejila, as the reward.

What just happened? I've read every book in the Carpathian series. Some were pretty good. Some not. But none left me thinking my book manufacturer left out 10 chapters! Seriously like they had a printing press issue and left a hundred pages out hoping no one would notice. I NOTICED! I flipped pages thinking they got the appendix/translation pages mixed up during the binging stage. I even skimmed those pages and they referenced nothing pertinent to the story! The "family tree" doesn't even reference the 2 main characters though their histories are referenced again and again. And again. This was boring. I'm sorry to type those words. I've tried to stick with the stories. I want these poor tortured ancient warriors to find happiness. I'm rooting for them! Normally these stories are hot enough I hope no one on my lunch break spies what I'm reading over my shoulder. Lots of throbbing and pulsating...But I actually found myself tapping my fingers and sighing a little. And with 20 something books to investigate I cannot prove it, but I am quite suspicious the author just cut and pasted a previous love scene from a past book into this one. The flower scene was new but I gotta say I rolled my eyes and skipped ahead on that one and then I couldn't figure out what I'd missed. I forced myself to go back and read that stupid scene because suddenly, abruptly the story changed. The evil is vanquished. Old characters are thrown in for familiar fuzzy feelings. A conversion takes place. And I'm searching through the appendix for pages out of order. This book was 50% off. That was not enough.

I have loved all the Dark Series, but this was a true flop. Too much 'out there' with a totally unbelievable character of Dax. It was just too cliche, with no detail as in other books regarding the relationship of Dax and Riley. I was truly disappointed in this book. I wait for months and months for a new Dark book, and it reads like it was thrown together in a few days. Christine, Please go back to your original style, it's what made me such a fan. Save your money folks for the paperback, this one just wasn't worth it. I only finished it because I had paid for it - it was truly that bad.

Finally an answer to the species dying. Hopefully the flower is a viable solution. I liked the intro of new old species that blend well with carpathians that are ancient. Solid read.
