Description

Abi returns from her honeymoon to find a threatening letter on the doormat. Her new friend Alice says her sister and brothers are claiming she’s secretly in possession of a priceless Russian tiara and associated jewels, and they insist on having their share ‒ and they are already arranging to take her to court.
This is news to Alice, so Abi and Alice, with their new husbands set out to search the creepy old house that Alice has recently purchased.
A neighbour says she has heard wailing coming from the house, and Abi’s childhood fear that the house is haunted seems to be confirmed when she sees a woman’s face staring out between the bars of a basement window at night.
The search for the Russian treasure leads to an unpleasant encounter with a dominating father and aunt. More problems for Abi to solve, in between running Button Up coffee shop with her co-owner Melanie Upton, who has romantic news to share. This time it sounds as though it could be promising ‒ with just one small drawback.

I gave up on this book. Abi is a snarky, nasty, and judgmental character. The plot was boring or nonexistent. The characters are superficial and uninteresting. My only response was “who cares?” The best part is that it is easily forgotten. Glad it was free. I hate wasting money on non entertaining material for puppy pads.

Disjointed writing, at times I wondered if the editor accidentally put paragraphs in the wrong order (or if I’d missed something). The storyline was decent and I finished the book, but getting there was painful with all of the strange, incomplete side stories that didn’t flesh out the characters as I think they were intended. But what was worse was how judgmental the “not judgmental” Abi was. Yes, she was kind and generous but the author had her thinking or “joking” about terrible things. [[[SPOILER]]] Like how she might not know if her wonderful friend Melanie was pregnant because was so “wide” (but they loved her for being cuddly!) and it was normal that Melanie would only marry her boyfriend if she could pawn off his 8-year old son. [[Trigger warning]] Or how she wanted Harry to know Bethany’s past and that she didn’t even know who fathered her baby, but of course Abi forgives her like a good Christian and doesn’t judge her! Even though she judges her constantly! And no word ever on the fact that Bethany doesn’t because she was drugged at 16, blacked out, and didn’t know enough about sex to realize what happened until she was 3 months pregnant. The author made sure she had this blameless background but made no efforts to not blame her thoroughly.
