Description

"As Jon Krakauer did with Into the Wild, Blehm turns a missing-man riddle into an insightful meditation on wilderness and the personal demons and angels that propel us into it alone.” — Outside magazine

Destined to become a classic of adventure literature, The Last Season examines the extraordinary life of legendary backcountry ranger Randy Morgenson and his mysterious disappearance in California's unforgiving Sierra Nevada—mountains as perilous as they are beautiful. Eric Blehm's masterful work is a gripping detective story interwoven with the riveting biography of a complicated, original, and wholly fascinating man.

Great read for the outdoors person…male or female! A true story that follows Randy from young adult into middle age. If you’ve ever been to the Sierra Nevada it is brought to life in the pages of this fantastic novel. I highly recommend this book. An adventure awaits!

A thought-provoking, compelling story that makes you ache for the resolution, but ultimately leaves you the choice to draw your own conclusions. More than most stories of the joys and risks of wilderness adventure, it provides a compelling vision of a life of a modern mountain man who lives in the backcountry, rather than a visitor or a conqueror. He is a naturalist, a hermit, a romantic, and a passionate advocate of wild places. It also gives a view of the psychology of a person who can and would devote decades to living alone in the wilderness. He is man tortured by his very love affair with the mountains. This passion reveals itself in dark side of passion - obsession, selfishness, and is ultimately passion that kills him. For the outdoor adventurer, it will make you think. It has made me think about how I hike and climb, why I take the risks I take, and the possible effects on those I leave behind.
