Description

A grumpy scarred veteran. A sunny wedding planner. A second chance at love?

When former Army Major Cameron Taylor comes home a hero from his deployment in the Middle East his scars run deep - both physically and emotionally. But he's starting over, running a luxury hotel with his best friends. And Lucy Goodwin, apparently…his high school sweetheart who he's never quite managed to forget.

There's only one reason Lucy's been engaged - and walked away - three times and now he's standing right in front of her. Cameron Taylor is the man she's never stopped loving, even when he left her "for her own good" all those years ago. There was nothing good about it, that's for sure. Just like there'd be nothing good about trying to break down Cameron's walls now. But that doesn't mean she's not tempted to try…

Claire Marti is one of my favorite contemporary romance authors, and I really enjoyed this latest installment in her California Suits series. It’s a spin-off from her Pacific Vista Ranch series, which is also wonderful––if you haven’t read those books give yourself a treat and read them too. The California Suits series is about a group of friends starting up a chain of boutique hotels, and each finding their true love in the process. We’ve seen Cameron, the main character in Monterey King, in previous installments of the series and my curiosity about him was piqued, so I loved having the opportunity to read his story. He gets a second chance at his first love, when he learns he will be working with Lucy at the new hotel his friends and he are opening in Monterey. Lucy is as cheerful as Cameron is grumpy and they’ve been apart a long time, but neither has really gotten over the other. Will they be able to make it work this time around? As with all Marti’s books, the writing is exquisite, the characters (even the secondary ones) are well-rounded and real, and the settings are described so beautifully that I always feel like I’ve taken a fabulous trip to California when I’ve finished one. Give yourself a treat and take a vacation to Monterey in the pages of Marti’s latest novel. I highly recommend it.
