Description

Winnifred Gobaldi and Byron Visser are not best friends.

Yes, they’ve known each other for years, but they’re not even friendly. Winnie considers them more like casual, distant acquaintances who find each other barely tolerable, especially when he's being condescending (which is all the time).

The truth is, they have nothing in common. She’s a public school science teacher with stars in her eyes, and he’s a pretentious, joyless double PhD turned world-famous bestselling fiction author. She loves sharing her passion for promulgating women in STEM careers and building community via social media, and he eschews all socialization, virtual or otherwise. She’s looking for a side hustle to help pay down a mountain of student debt, and his financial portfolio is the stuff of fiduciary wet dreams. So why are they faking a #bestfriend relationship for millions of online spectators?

When a simple case of tit-for-tat trends between nonfriends leads to a wholly unexpected kind of pretend, nothing is simple. Sometimes, it takes a public audience to reveal the truth of private feelings, and rarely—very rarely—you should believe what you see online.

Ten Trends to Seduce Your Bestfriend is a full-length, complete standalone, adult contemporary romantic comedy.

Penny Reid is over changing views and vernacular. Love to see it. The turmoil and thought process from a person with sensory issues to ptsd and slowly building a bridge and hoping it’s of the golden gate variety just keeps you going! Finished it in a day I couldn’t put it down

This story had such interesting characters. Both the hero and heroine had flaws but the hero was a very different kind of hero. He had sensory problems, didn’t like people and mostly lived in his own head. The heroine didn’t trust people to not let her down. It was quite a journey for them to figure how to meet in the middle. There was some great humor as the heroine was quirky. The hero was often inadvertently funny. Great read

Like all of Penny’s books I never wanted to put the book down. Deadlines for work…ha! What are those… Penny is an amazing author with a mind like no other. I love that she used her science knowledge in this book made it more authentic and so her. Absolutely loved the characters and their psychological impediments. The wit and sarcasm is my favorite thing from this author. Thanks for the escape ❤️

Penny writes complex characters that you root for and want to know more about. Penny is a master at slowly revealing what has motivated and formed the main characters. You keep telling yourself I’m only going to read one more page and then one more chapter and suddenly it is 2 a.m. and you are so close to finishing you can’t stop now. That was the case with this book. Winnie and Byron are such fascinating characters and draw you into their story. You can feel their longing for each other and angst that it isn’t shared. I’m so happy some chapters were from Byron’s point of view. I think his chapters elevated my understanding of his motivations and thus my beieving he was worthy of Winnie. And I liked the authenciity of the more intimate scenes. You don’t often see that in a romance.

I've read many of Reid's books, and loved them all. I love her honesty and quirky, smart characters. I love how all her books model the way communication is the heart of any successful relationship. I love the quality of her writing. I love that she assumes, and demonstrates, that people don't have to be gorgeous, young, fashionable and materialistic to fall in love or be in love. Or that they can be any of those things. I love that she values what goes into a successful long-term relationship, and that friendships are as important as love relationships to her. I love that she always does her homework. Most of all, I love that, having communicated, her characters then *think about* what was said and use that thinking to guide their future actions. That being said, I think her writing improves with each book. So this might be her best book. She says she struggled with the characters, that they took over, and made the book longer than intended. I loved all of those things. There was time for things to unfold naturally. When two people appear to be complete opposites, and are both principled, thoughtful and stubborn, insta-love isn't common, nor likely to work over time. I could feel that neither the hero nor the heroine would be easy to be friends with, but their rightness for each other became perfectly clear, and after a while I sensed how they would each be a good friend. Also, they're both funny. Anyway, if any of this appeals to you, I encourage you to enjoy this delicious, wry, funny, warm book. On the other hand, if you're allergic to sincerity, avoid like the plague.

I have yet to read a Penny Reid story that I haven't fallen hard for. This newest story is no exception. The main characters are fresh, funny, and had me riveted to the page.  This is the story of Bryon and Winnie.  Winnie is a giver, she is always going above and beyond to make sure everyone in her orbit are happy, sometimes to the detriment of her own happiness. She is adorkable and sweet, she fights hard to further the future of women and STEM. Byron is an enigma. He is terse, blunt, and obscenely honest, which can make him seem arrogant and cruel. But there is a method to his madness and it was absolutely lovely to see how Winnie became the "Bryon Whisperer". I absolutely adored the slow burn of their relationship, the inner dialogue of both Winnie and Byron was fantastic.  Even as a vintage gal, I was able to relate to these two and am guilty of looking up some of those challenges on TikTok.  This standalone story is absolutely brilliant, I could feel these characters and respect the heck out of Ms. Reid for the research and study she did to make Winnie and Bryon as authentic as possible!  This is going on my "Best Reads of 2022" list!
